My little people are not morning people; which means they are slow movers in the early hours. I have to do a little prep work in order for them to sleep in as late as possible and still make it to school on time. With a little planning you can make the morning time before school a lot less painful.
Here are a few things we do regarding before school prep:
1. On Sundays, the girls and I pick out their clothes for the week. We take about ten minutes and pick out clothes together. Once they have each picked out five outfits, I hang them in a separate area of the closet so we can easily identify the choices for the week. I don’t do anything fancy like put labels for each day on them or anything like that…I know some people do, but that is just an extra step that I don’t find necessary. When the girls get out of bed in the morning they grab their underwear, socks, and a an outfit from the pre-selected grouping and head downstairs (they keep their shoes in a shoe bin by the backdoor).
2. Once the kids are up and have their clothes in hand, we head downstairs for breakfast. They eat breakfast, clear their dishes, and then proceed to dress themselves. Having them dress themselves allows me to tend to dishes or baby Mac. Once the girls are dressed they brush their teeth at the sink and I do their hair. This is where our morning routine drawer comes in handy. You can read more about our about our drawer here.
3. The last thing the girls do is put on their shoes and put their dirty pjs on the bottom of the stairs (don’t want the girls going back upstairs or I will lose them!) for me to take up the next time I head upstairs.
Now, my girls only go to school half day so they don’t need to pack a lunch. If they did, we would pack it together the night before and leave it in the fridge to grab in the morning. Their school provides a healthy snack so we don’t have to worry about that either.
Also, the girls do not need a backpack for school, but if they did I would go through it in the evenings and take out what needs to stay home and replenish anything that needs to go back to school. The girls do bring home a weekly folder. I usually sort through it while they eat lunch and leave it in a designated spot for them to grab in the morning. It is their responsibility to remember to return the folder to school the following day. It is never to soon to start teaching responsibilities!
What’s your morning routine?
