Got 20 minutes to spare? Then you have enough time to tackle a small organization project around your home. I like to call it “20 minute clean up”. Pick a small, manageable area that needs a little TLC, set a timer for 20 minutes, and get to work. For me, the timer is key in order to prevent me from getting distracted. Save the closet clean out for another time. The idea here is to pick an area that you will be able to tidy up in 20 minutes or less. For example, a drawer, a cabinet, the car, kitchen counter top, etc.
Today I decided to clean up the mess under my kitchen sink. Now the before is not too bad, but the towels were overflowing and there were way too many cleaning products lurking behind closed doors.
I started by removing everything from cabinet. Then I went through the cleaning supplies and threw away any that were not used or were old. I also sorted through the stack of kitchen towels and got rid of the ones that were torn, stained, or never used.
I vacuumed and wiped down the inside of the cabinet before I began putting things back inside. I also washed the plastic bins I had been using as there was a layer of soap lining the bottom from leaks and spills. It is always nice to start with a fresh, clean slate. I grouped similar cleaning supplies together in the plastic bins I had been previously been using and placed them back into the cabinet.
I had these clear, plastic drawers sitting unused in our closet. I thought they would be the perfect place to house all the small items under our sink like sponges, extra gloves, Plink drops, and towels. All of our kitchen towels were now able to fit nicely in one of the drawers after I pulled out the undesirable ones.
I used a 3M command clip that I placed on the door to hold rubber gloves. Now they are easy to find and dry quickly.
As you can see, the after isn’t too different from the before, but a few small tweaks as well as tossing unused items really opened up the space. Now there is even room on the left side of the cabinet for the girls’ to keep their spill bucket (a small bucket with a sponge and towel that they use to clean up spills they make around the house). In less than 20 minutes I was able to make this small space more user friendly.
My next step is to replace my cleaning products with more environmentally and family friendly ones that I make using essential oils.
