Meet Kristin Cogan, MA, LPC

Therapist in Houston Specializing in Mothers

Imperfectly Wonderful Counseling is a different kind of counseling experience – a partnership between you and me.

As a therapist in Texas, I specialize in working with mothers and teenagers, two groups of people who often feel like they have to do everything perfectly. I help them see that perfection is unnecessary and that being imperfectly wonderful is okay.

Our sessions together will be easygoing – like catching up with an old friend, as I learn about what’s been getting in the way of the life you desire for yourself. Because maybe it’s not perfectionism – maybe it’s anxiety, grief, trauma, or something else affecting your daily life.

Together, we’ll identify the thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors interfering with your joy and which tools work best to get you back on track, feeling more empowered and confident in your direction than before.

The more we work together as a team to help you build the life you dream of, you’ll come to find that I’m different from other therapists you know or who you had in mind. I’m not the β€œhow does that make you feel” type of therapist, but more of a β€œlet’s get our hands dirty and figure this out” therapist. But as we dig up the dirt in your life and I truly get to know you - the good, the bad, and the β€œugly” - I will do so with the utmost kindness.

I also won’t let us lose sight of the fact that therapy should be fun! It’s not all seriousness or about dwelling on the negative; it’s about finding solutions and moving forward! It’s an opportunity to talk about the latest Netflix show you’ve been bingeing, which is just as important as personal growth to live a balanced, happy, and fulfilling life. This is my number one goal for you.

Through therapy with me, you can expect big changes, like shifts in your beliefs and thoughts, that will transform your life when combined with my support and guidance. But this does not make me an expert with all the answers. I’ll never look down on you, judge you, or tell you what you need to do. Rather, I’ll be a fellow human being, ready to listen, understand, and empathize with your challenges.

After all, I’m climbing my own mountain of life. But my role is to see what you struggle to see from your side of the mountain. And with this newfound perspective, we’ll combine all the tools and insight necessary to climb up to the top – building the rich and meaningful life you seek along the way.

This mountain is the big picture of your life. You already have the strength and tools within you to manifest it for yourself; I’m just here to help lay the groundwork for your journey, developing maps and plans to help you overcome your unique hurdles. I’ll give you little nudges when you’re limiting yourself, and I’ll cheer you on proudly when I notice you expanding.

No matter where you are in your journey to healing, I’m here to meet you with compassion, sympathy, and, let’s face it, a little bit of quick wit to keep us going forward.

Now, let’s transform your life!  It’s time to say β€œyes” to yourself and the person you’re ready to be.

Hi, I’m Kristin. I’m so Glad You Are Here!

My Approach to Therapy

Therapy should be as unique as the individuals seeking it, so I like to mix and match various schools of psychological theory and research. By drawing from a range of approaches, I can offer a therapy experience that is adaptable, inclusive, and flexible. During counseling, I like using Somatics, Mindfulness, EMDR Therapy and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy to help you effectively navigate life's challenges.

But I don't just stop there. I prioritize finding out what self-care methods work best for you as an individual and how to incorporate them into your daily life. I believe a holistic approach is crucial for healing and growth, so I ask questions about your sleep, diet, and exercise. By taking an individualized approach, we can tailor the therapy sessions to meet your unique needs and help you achieve your goals. So, whether you're seeking help with anxiety, grief, or any other issue, I'll be here to guide you through the process.
